The background story. Last weekend, my roommate Ken went snake-catching with some of his friends. He brought home a California King snake, which he put in a terrarium that he has in his room.
The snake looked pretty cool, and my roommate assured me that he was non-venomous.
You can image my how thrilled I was when I received the following email from this very same roommate this past Monday:
Hey Guys,
It seems my pet snake has loosed the bonds that held him down and is slithering freely in my room and maybe even the house. I think it is just a matter of time before he turns up, so just keep an eye out for him and check your shoes before you put them on.
Sorry……
Thanks for your help though.
Ken
Anyway, this story has a happy ending as about 90 minutes ago, my neighbor came to the door, slightly terrified because she saw a striped snake under her car and was about to call the fire department. Luckily, the snake was alive, although a bit scared and with some tail damage.
The moral of this story? Leave the urban snakes alone!!!

One of the side effects of developing a fairly consistent pattern of going to bed around 10pm and waking up just before 6am is that on a Saturday like today, when I wake up (alarm-less) at 7am, I’m fully awake and ready to go.
So as I headed down to Ralph’s this morning to buy coffee filters, I noticed that it was sprinkling for the first time in months. I don’t think that it will actually rain today, yet I can’t say how happy I am that this heat is finally over.
So now that September is over, the novelty of being in school has very much worn off for my kids as they are finally remembering all that being in school means. Bells, homework, quizzes, projects, drama, institutional lunches, trips to the dean’s office, and all the rest.
Other than that, there’s literally not much that’s new out here. And with that I’ll sign off, knowing full well that one of life’s greatest disappointments is excitedly reading someone’s new blog post, getting to the end of it, and realizing that it was nothing but horrifically boring.
Now Playing: Eastbound and Down – Jerry Reed

I’m all for seeing live music. In fact, I’m all for seeing live music, especially when it’s free. One of the best parts of Los Angeles is that we are home to Amoeba Music (a ginormous independent record store), which frequently hosts free concerts right in the store. (The audience actually lines up amidst the rows and rows of CDs, cassettes, and LPs.
And while I’m always up for hearing and experiencing something new, last night’s MURS concert at Amoeba reaffirmed my distaste for most (albeit, not all) hip-hop. Honestly, I’m much more looking forward to next Tuesday, when Jackson Browne will play a free set there.
And while yesterday I was reminded of what I didn’t like, I also ended up digging up an old memory of something I did like, the country song Eastbound and Down, from the amazing film Smokey and the Bandit. Too bad Jerry Reed doesn’t play Amoeba shows anymore.
