You’ve got to celebrate the little things in life. Today at the gym I did seven pushups, which is about six and a half more than I’m typically able to do. I share this excitement in no way to brag (after all, seven pushups is hardly worth bragging about), but rather to share how big a deal this was to me when it occurred. As I counted past 2…… 3…… 4…… 5…… 6……, I realized how important it is to celebrate the small victories, as they are often steps to larger ones.
The obvious (and analogous) application is that it’s just as important to celebrate the small academic feats that my kids accomplish on their way to college, for instance, making a big deal about finally mastering the multiplication tables, or acing a test on exponents.
The second application is that once again, you can use statistics to say whatever you want, including that my pushup output recently underwent a 1,300% increase. In this manner, I’ve become very skeptical of school statistics that are publicized in promotion of a particular school, entity, or program.
